Community News

Hi! I’m last again to get my article in to Fran. She is a much more patient editor than Fr. Frank about the deadline. We at the Worker have been extremely blessed since our last via pacis.

Fr. Kevin Cameron and Fr. David Fleming were again the caterers for our Thanksgiving Day Feast. They have done this project for the last five years and are getting better every time. I would like to thank all the people who helped them put the dinner together. God bless you all.

Carol Fennelly, past CCNV (Center for Creative Nonviolence) member and now the Director of Hope House, was here this fall. She gave a talk at the Worker on her prison ministry. She is an awesome advocate for families and the need for families and prisoners to stay connected. She also visited us over the New Year’s holiday. We are grateful that she has blessed us with her presence twice in one year. We will continue to keep her and her ministry in our prayers. (For more information on the Hope House ministry, write to: Hope House, PO Box 748, Murfreesboro, NC 27885-0748 or call 252-396-0884.)

Ted “Vern” Walker has been a breath of fresh air to our whole community. He is a prince among men. He has such compassion and caring it is always a joy to be near him. He has grown every day in his love for the works we do. He took a much deserved break over Christmas and New Year to visit his family. He was much missed by us all. We are truly inspired and blessed by his presence.

Frank has been doing excellent with his recovery from his heart attack. He passed Phase I of his program at Mercy Hospital and is now in the maintenance part of the program. He is grateful for all prayers, cards and phone calls. He did not get arrested at the Feast of Holy Innocents in Omaha as you may have read in the paper.

Eddie took a much deserved break at Thanksgiving to visit his family in Louisville. He came back happy to be doing the works of mercy. Eddie went to court on January 3rd for his line-crossing last August at Offutt Air Force Base. He will be sentenced on March 6. Keep him and Frank in your prayers. We are proud of their commitment to nonviolent civil disobedience. If you don’t stand up for what you believe in, don’t expect anyone to stand up for you.

Mike Thompson has been very busy handing out coats and long underwear. He has a great eye for what size is needed. He has been busy on the house doing the day-to-day works. He is a doer and always willing to give of himself.

Fran and Mike Fuller have been very busy. Fran crossed the line at the Feast of Holy Innocents and was arrested. Go, Fran! Mike Fuller, by default, won the Chess Tournament. We hope to have another one soon so we can give out the trophy. Fran has been busy collecting and inputting all the articles for the via pacis. She is doing an excellent job.

Yusupha Sanneh has been working at his new job driving a semitrailer to raise the funds to get a degree in civil engineering at Iowa State University. He manages to be in good spirits even while dealing with problems in his country, Gambia.

Jerry and Irving have been working hard. Jerry helps out around the house and Irving has been keeping us in clean laundry and towels. No small feat with only one washer and dryer. If you know of anyone who would like to donate a good washer and gas dryer, please let us know.

Richard Flamer has been busy rounding up stuff to take to Chiapas. He is planning on two delegations going down this year. He and Ted have been keeping up on the hardwood floors at Dingman House.

We have a new friend who has blessed us with his many questions. He is a great dishwasher and a great talker. If you see a smiling face you don’t recognize, say “hi” to Don Cain from Cumming, IA.

Jackie has been busy with her granddaughter who celebrated her first birthday in November. She went to Kansas City to visit her best friend, Jamie, and to see her Godson who calls her Aunt Jack. She has been fighting a cold for a long time so keep her in your prayers.

My three sons, Julius, Joshua and Jordan, loved their winter break. Julius went to his grandmother’s in Davenport for four days. Joshua stayed over at his buddy Michael’s a couple of times. Jordan stayed up until the wee hours of the morning watching movies and reading. They are all excited to be back in school. Julius is doing good for the East High basketball team. Josh brought all his grades up. Jordan got all A’s except one which as a B. He received a certificate for his high grades.

I was very busy in December. I finished my classes with a B in Ethics and a C in Economics. They were very tough classes, but I learned a lot. We had a nice Christmas Dinner at the House. We also had party food on New Year’s Day that was a nice time for our guests. I start back to school on January 7. Please keep me in your prayers…I’m taking Algebra.

I feel very blessed to live in a community that not only talks the talk but also walks the walk. We know that would not be possible without each and every one of your prayers. So keep it up. May you have a joyous New Year. God Bless.
