Call to Action
by Fran Fuller
Call To Action USA (CTA) is an independent national organization of over 22,000 people and 40 local organizations who believe the Spirit of God is at work in the whole church, not just in its appointed leaders. They believe the entire Catholic Church has the obligation of responding to the needs of the world and taking initiative in programs of peace and justice.
CTA celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2001. At the first Call To Action Conference laity, religious, priests and bishops came together to vote for an inclusive Vatican II church open to women and married priests, with shared decision-making and a shared social justice agenda.
Helen Oster, Rita Hohenshell and I recently attended the Call to Action National Conference held in Chicago on November 2-4, 2001. This was a regional conference attended by over 2,000 people and the agenda spanned a range of topics in church reform, social justice and spirituality. There were speakers from Asia, Africa and Latin America and an international panel of liberation theologians. The conference provided times both for praying and learning about significant issues confronting our church and society.
