Nuclear Racism
Most Mining and Milling of Uranium Occurs On Indian Lands
"Nuclear energy and its waste were created in arrogance and corruption, and continue to expand power of wealth and corruption throughout the entire world by the sacrifice of people of color upon its unholy altar." - Rufina Marie Laws, Mescalero Apache
Without nuclear racism, there would be no nuclear energy. Nuclear energy targets people of color for the mining, milling, and processing of uranium, and the storage of radioactive wastes.
Most uranium mining and milling occur on Hopi and Navajo lands in the Southwest U.S., on Cree lands in Northern Canada, on Aboriginal homelands of Australia, and on Tribal homelands in South Africa.
Communities of color bear a disproportionate share of the risks and health effects caused by radiation released during mining and milling. Milled uranium must be enriched and fabricated into fuel.
