OCW News Dec 18 2007

Dear Friends of the Omaha Catholic Worker,

Greetings to you in this Season of Advent.

We are indeed grateful for the many gifts that we have received in the last Year since we opened this small House of hospitality for homeless men. We are very full with 5 men. We are very blessed to have a full house this year. Last year we were 3 CW's and 1 guest, and few people knew we were open. The exception was that Holy Family Church people knew about us. We are thankful for that over and over again.
We have received some gifts for Christmas for our guests and the House, and we are indeed thankful.

We are in greater need of money to pay the rent and utilities for January and February. These are the gifts that are the hardest to ask for or beg for. We do not get any grants from the government or church institutions. There still are so many Catholics especially in many parishes that do not even know that we are here. We are supported by several generous people. We do not get paid for our work. We do not get any grants or government funding. We are simple people trying to trust and live a simple life and share that with strangers and the marginalized.

Please consider becoming a regular pledge donor each month.
We live by faith each month and God has provided for us. Please tell your friends about us. Encourage your pastor to have us come and speak to other parishioners about the OCW and how they can get involved personally.

None of the money received for the work of the poor here at the OCW, goes to support the Criminal Justice system.

Jerry was given an alternative sentence of 2 days in jail, instead of $119 ( $75 fine plus court costs). This came from an act of Faith and civil disobedience at the Space Weapons Arms Bazaar put on at the Qwest Center on October 10, 2007 sponsored by OFFUTT AFB and STRATCOM.
Jerry has asked that No money be sent to us to help him pay the fine. It is Catholic Worker tradition to do things at personal sacrifice and he is glad and honored to go to jail and be with the poor in jail. It is our opinion that that would not be good stewardship and does not benefit the poor, but rather an injustice system.

Jerry will be going to the Douglas County Jail on January 11th and 12th to do his sentence. Charles Bergman and Andy Bauer, a Creighton University student has volunteered to be present at the house while Jerry is away. Thanks so much for their support.

We are in great need of your generous help, just to pay the bills, utilities, van costs and insurance each month to month.

We encourage any new donors and regular donors to please come by the house for a visit and for dinner with us.
