Roundtable Discussions, first Friday of the Month

Dear Friends of the Omaha Catholic Worker,

Greetings to you and Peace be with you.

The Catholic Worker movement, ever since its beginnings with Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day in 1933, has always had discussions of relevant issues of faith and the "social Order" as Peter called it. Today one might call it Faith and Politics.

Peter started " Clarifications of Thought" meetings where people gathered to discuss in roundtable fashion a certain topic of the day. Check out:

Some times Peter would recite some of his " Easy Essays", and discussion would follow.

We here at the OCW would like to try and start " roundtable" discussions as well, on the First Friday of every month. Round table discussions are just that, not debates, or diatribes, but ways to "clarify our thoughts". Action follows from our thinking and thoughts.

Everyone's viewpoint will be accepted with dignity and grace. Difference of opinions will be shared and heard. Nonviolence and respect are the rule. Most meetings will be moderated and facilitated by a leader. Refreshments will be served .

Here in Omaha, we would invite speakers and discussion leaders on various topics.
Such as:
1. What the Catholic Worker Believes, the Basics!
2. What the Catholic Worker Does not believe, and why?
3. What homelessness is really like in Omaha?
4. What is it like to live on the streets or in the larger shelters?
5. What does the "Preferential Option for the Poor" really mean in the US Bishops statements?
6. Why is the Catholic Worker involved with Resistance to Militarism and also advocate for justive for the homeless ? Is there a symbiotic relationship?
7. What really is the Just War Theory in 2007. Is it relevant anymore?
8. What Pacifism is and is Not, according to Catholic Social Teaching?

These are just some possibilities.

The possibilities are wide open and too many to name.

We are only able to start with the First Friday of each month from 7-9 pm. Party afterwards.

What do people in the wider community of Omaha think? Is there too many conflicts of interests with other activities on the First Friday of the Month?

Please let us know what you would like to see happen. We may be able to start as soon as December 7th, 2007. Stay tuned.
