OMAHA CATHOLIC WORKER
FALL 2007 NEWSLETTER

Dear Friends of the Omaha Catholic Worker:

Greetings and Peace to you!
Dear friends, we have had to change our email address: Please notice the new one - cwomaha@gmail.com - and discard change the old one on your email address books. Thanks so much.

HOUSE FUNDS AND FINANCES

Many people ask us to let them know when our funds get low. So here it is, the news!!!!!

Our last appeal went out in July 2006 and so we have been pretty good with receiving funds from very gracious donors. We have started to receive several monthly pledges. We are thankful and do encourage folks to consider a monthly pledge of any amount. We practice good stewardship and use our money wisely thinking of our guests first. Someone once said that "donating money to the OCW was a "good bang for the buck" . Possibly, that is a bad metaphor. Presently we are getting pretty low again. The bills of October are all paid. Colder weather approaches, Christmas is not far away. We presently only have $500 in the bank. Our November rent is $650 a month, plus utilities, car insurance and Van costs. and other items not donated to us.

We encourage new donors to please come by the house for a visit, if you can. Jesus had dinner with many donors and he was a guest of many.

We like new dinner guests at 6:00 pm each nite. This way you get to see where your money goes. None of us get paid a salary or wages. We live on the providence of a generous God with faith and daily prayer. There is no CEO. We are very thankful for the many gifts that we have received from friends. Gifts come in all forms, money, labor, volunteers, and food donations. God works in mysterious ways. Thanks to whoever you are who dropped of a framed print of the "Laughing Jesus" on our back patio. We do laugh a lot and are reminded of that each morning at prayer. Please call us for any further information about our financial needs.

Checks can be made out to "Omaha Catholic Worker" and sent to our house address. Thanks so much for your love and generosity.

FALL UPDATE

It has been an exciting summer for us. The garden was full, and we have reaped the harvest of many vegetables. In July we were able to put out our 1st newsletter in the mail. Mass and Potluck nites continue to be a success. We now have another community member living at the house, he is the "Stunningly handsome" Mr. Leo Marks. In addition we are looking forward to accepting a young couple recently graduated from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. They are Charles Bergman and Alexi Motta. They will likely be here toward the end of October and stay till the spring or summer of 2008. They are checking out volunteer positions in the Dominican Republic. We also have another young man John Baker, who is traveling around to visit a lot of CW Houses. He will be here for 30 days in November. Nick Greer, who was with us for the summer is now doing well in Kansas City, Missouri working as a physical therapist at Research Hospital. He is looking for more options to apply physical therapy to the poor of KC. He is also connected as extended community to the KCMO Catholic Worker Community and their work. We miss him a lot.

OUR GUESTS

We have had 20 guests since our opening in October 2006. We presently have 4 guests. Mark Underwood, Steven Welch and Matthew Hickey, and Quincy Thomas. All four of them have been referrals from Community Alliance. There seems to be not enough temporary places for men with mental illness to live... We at the OCW we offer a small, quiet and safe place for those struggling with mental illness, as an alternative to the larger homeless shelters in Omaha.

STRATEGIC SPACE AND DEFENSE CONFERENCE

October 10th, 2007, 11:00 am Quest Convention Center

Thanks to the many Friends of the OCW who participated in the Nonviolent Presence and Witness to Life.

Peg Gallagher 89, Fr. Jack Mc Caslin 79, and Jerry Ebner 57
were arrested for participating in a Die-In, while Defense contractors and Defense Dept officials were buying and selling NEW Space Weapons. The charge was a violation of Omaha City Ordinance 20-155 a misdemeanor. They were released on personal recognizance and will be at court on:

November 14th Wednesday at 1:30 pm
Please join us for this court hearing, in support at the Douglas CountyCourt House, 2nd floor, Farnam Street downtown Omaha, NE.

Evening Volunteer Program

5- 9 pm
We are very thankful for
Beth Dickey, Fr. Chuck Lintz SSC, Andy Bauer, Natalie Van Heek and John Tiedeman.
These folks are our VIP's for the Evening Volunteer Program (EVP) 5-9 pm. They train others, like possibly yourself. Our evening Volunteer Program of staffing the house and being with our guests on nights from 5-9 pm is taking off really well. This opportunity is open for many others. This gives our volunteers the opportunity to be with our guests, cook a meal, share it around a common table, and enjoy a quiet evening of cards, fellowship, TV/ movies. This also offers the Live in community members a chance to get out of the house and take care of personal business and respite and fellowship with friends and family as well. This is a mutual receiving gift to us.

WHAT THE CATHOLIC WORKER BELIEVES:

An Easy Essay

By Peter Maurin

1. The Catholic Worker believes in the gentle personalism of traditional Catholicism.

2. The Catholic Worker believes in the personal obligation of looking after the needs of your brother and sister.

3. The Catholic Worker believes in the daily practice of the Works of Mercy.

4. The Catholic Worker believes in Houses of Hospitality for the immediate relief of those who are in need.

5. The Catholic Worker believes in the establishment of farming communes where each one works according to their ability and each one receives according to their needs.

6. The Catholic Worker believes in creating a new society within the shell of the old, with the philosophy of the new, which is not a new philosophy, but a very old philosophy, a philosophy so old that it looks like new.

LOVE IS THE MEASURE

Under the heading " Love is the measure" Dorothy Day writes in the June 1946 Catholic Worker

"What we would like to do is change the world---
make it a little simpler,
For people to feed, clothe and shelter themselves as
God intended them to do.
And, to a certain extent,
by fighting for better conditions,
by crying out unceasingly for the rights of workers, rights of the poor, rights of the destitute---
the rights of the worthy and the unworthy poor,
. . .in other words --- we can to a certain extent change the world;
We can work for the oasis,
the little cell of joy and peace in a harried world.
We can throw our pebble in the pond and
be confident that it's ever- widening circle will reach around the world .
We repeat, there is nothing that we can do but love, -----
and dear God, please enlarge our hearts to love each other,
to love our neighbor,
to love our enemies as well as our friends.
